Buhloone Mindstate is the third studio album by De La Soul. It was released on September 21, 1993, and was the group's last record to be produced with Prince Paul. From Posdnous of De La Soul: "The title means having the elevated mind state ofa “buhloone”, or balloon. We might blowup but we won’t go pop, or in other words, we’re popular but not trying to make pop music. Hanging out with Q-Tip got me deeper into jazz and funk. -- We loved James Brown’s horn section — Maceo Parker on alto, Pee Wee Ellis on tenor, Fred Wesley on trombone - so we thought, ‘Why not ask them to guest with us?’ To our surprise, they were keen. It was really inspiring to see them record — they’d hang out, chat, laugh, have fun, they’d sing ideas and jam. It was amazing to see that. This is the first album where the live musicians started to become as important as the samples, and they affected the samples — Lou Rawls, Eddie Harris, Lou Donaldson, Lonnie Smith and so on." Beyond the members of the legendary JBs, the album features Dres from Black Sheep, Biz Markie, Guru, and Japanese rappers Scha Dara Parr and Takagi Kan. 'I Am I Be' features spoken introductions from Dres, Shortie, Chip Fu, May May Ali (Mohammed's daughter), Busta Rhymes, "Patrick" (who has the biggest shrimp collection in the world!"), and Q-Tip. The lattermost is on the song despite Pos rapping "Some tongues who lied / And said 'We'll be natives to the end' / Nowadays, we don't even speak" a dig at his fellow Native Tongues collective, most notably Tip and Tribe Called Quest. Paul remembers Pos rapping it with Q-Tip in the controller room listening. Beyond the dense musicality, the song is regarded for the vulnerability of the lyrics and performance. Lead single 'Breakadawn' notably samples Michael Jackson's 'I Can't Help It' and Smokey Robinson's 'A Quiet Storm'. Trugoy raps about squids and punks and rejects the D.AI.S.Y. Age, where Plug 1's verse is darker, about his experience on the street. The music video was filmed at Vasquez Rocks in California. This location is famous for being the "alien planet" backdrop in numerous Star Trek episode. It performed well...it reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Maxi-Singles Sales chart and peaked at #30 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The song only peaked at #76 on the Billboard Hot 100, which was a minor disappointment in the Tommy Boy Records camp compared to newer successes like House of Pain and the rising Queen Latifah. However, the song has a legacy as one of the group's timeless hits, and leads the album in streams since added to DSPs in 2023. 'Eyepatch' is a reference to Trugoy's tendency to cover one eye in pictures and videos and to use 'Eye' and 'i' interchangeably. Prince Paul even says he would sometimes throw one on (I can't find pictures, edit if you find Dave in an eyepatch).
